Cross Training with Pilates

Properly preparing for a marathon as a novice or experienced runner is important as it can positively contribute to your performance, physical health and mental well-being.

Cross training is key for marathon preparation as it provides an opportunity for the body to actively recover, prevents burnout and strengthens global and accessory muscle groups that are at work while we run.

One way we love to train and support our runners who come through our doors at The Wellness Den by Cynergy is via Reformer Pilates.

Where and how does Pilates fit in a marathon runner’s training program?

Pilates can be implemented multiple times a week as a cross training tool! When combined with weightlifting two times a week, Pilates can also be done two times a week for a well-rounded regimen.

Below are some additional benefits of incorporating Pilates into your marathon training.

Increased Core Strength

Pilates helps to build lumbopelvic stability and strength in both global and accessory muscle groups as well as deep core stabilizers such as the transversus abdominis. Strengthening the core can help to alleviate low back pain associated with running.

Reducing Risk for Injury

Pilates aims to build muscular endurance and hypertrophy, which can be helpful in mitigating overuse type of injuries such as IT band syndrome, Achilles tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis, and runner’s knee.

Improved Mind to Muscle Connection

Pilates requires an individual to develop a heightened awareness and mindfulness of proper and specific muscle activation. The exercises and cueing emphasize optimal form and alignment, aiding in the prevention of compensatory movement patterns.

Decrease in Burnout

Incorporating Pilates into your running routine not only adds variety to your training, but also provides a mental break, and serves as an active recovery tool in order to enhance athletic performance while avoiding burnout.

To supplement your running regimen, we recommend Private Pilates Sessions or our move·well class: held every Monday-Thursday and Saturday. Check out our promotional session and class pack prices here.
