Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) & Pilates
Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is an autonomic nervous system condition that causes an individual’s heart to beat faster than normal when transitioning from sitting or lying down to standing up.
Most individuals diagnosed with POTS are women or people assigned female at birth, typically aged 15 to 25. Common symptoms include chronic fatigue, lightheadedness, palpitations, cognitive impairments, sleep disturbances, headaches, tremors, tachycardia, anxiety, depression, gastrointestinal issues, and vision changes. A comprehensive diagnostic process should include a detailed history, physical examination, basic lab tests, and a thorough cardiac evaluation.
Physical activity and exercise conditioning are fundamental components of POTS treatment, and it is recommended that all patients begin a gradual exercise regimen. Low-intensity resistance training, particularly focusing on lower body and core movements, is essential for improving venous return and overall circulation. Incorporating a Pilates approach can further enhance treatment outcomes by emphasizing core strength, flexibility, and body awareness, helping patients build stability and confidence as they manage their symptoms.
In conjunction with physical activity, POTS treatment also consists of an interprofessional approach for effective management. The chronic nature of POTS and its symptoms can lead to significant psychological distress, including anxiety and depression.
Ongoing cognitive and psychological care can also provide patients with education about their condition, empowering them to manage symptoms effectively and make informed decisions about their health.
